Contributor guidelines

Ascend Magazine welcomes written contributions from those with experience in licensure and regulation. We look for contributors with regulatory, academic, journalistic, and legal backgrounds with experience with regulation, government technology, or regulatory theory to share their insights and experience on relevant news, trends, and topics related to regulation and digital government.

About Ascend Magazine:

Thentia launched Ascend Magazine in March 2022 with the mission of engendering education, conversation, and community around regulation and licensure.

Ascend’s insight and research-driven articles aim to provide clear, concise, impartial, and focused discussion of an issue or theme relevant to licensure, regulation, or digital government. Topics regularly explored in Ascend include:

  • Current news and trends around occupational and professional regulation.
  • Licensing and regulatory reform.
  • Government technology modernization and regulatory transformation.
  • Innovation related to regulatory processes such as continuing education, complaints and investigations, and reporting.
  • Measuring regulatory performance; and much more.

Our Audience:

The Ascend Magazine website attracts over 5,000 visitors each month, and our weekly and monthly newsletters reach thousands of subscribers. Our audience is comprised of regulators, state/provincial IT leaders and CIOs, professional associations, policymakers, academics, and anyone else interested in the world of regulation and digital government.

Submission Criteria:

  • Submissions should be between 750-1,500 words.
  • Contributors should avoid technical or academic jargon to ensure content is accessible for a wide audience.
  • Topics should be related to regulation, digital government, or professional licensure. If you have a broad topic in mind, we can help you refine it for one or multiple articles.
  • We welcome all perspectives but will not accept submissions that are inflammatory, overly political, or overtly promotional.

How to Contribute:

Articles should be submitted via email to editor@ascend.thentia.com.

For each submission, please include:

  • A fully written, plain-text draft of your article sent in a Word document (no Pdfs).
  • Any relevant links to sources mentioned in the article or that would be helpful for context. Links should be integrated in the article text instead of footnotes/endnotes.
  • An article abstract: a short description of what you cover in the article.
  • Any suggestions you might have for relevant visuals to accompany the article.

New contributors should include:

  • A short bio of yourself (1-2 sentences) that briefly covers your area(s) of expertise, experience, and current role/organization.
  • Your headshot (if available).
  • Your Twitter and/or LinkedIn handles (if applicable).

Additional Information:

  • In most cases, selected articles will be published within 3-6 weeks of submission.
  • We are unable to compensate contributors for submissions. However, we regularly promote Ascend Magazine content via our newsletters and on Ascend’s and Thentia’s social media accounts.
  • If your article is posted elsewhere after publication in Ascend Magazine, please include a link to the original article.

By submitting to Ascend Magazine, you agree that:

  • Your submission has not been previously published or posted elsewhere and is neither currently under review anywhere else nor will it be submitted anywhere else before publication on the Ascend website.
  • Your submission may be edited prior to publication.
  • You will work with us if necessary to ensure the submission meets Ascend’s editorial standards.
  • Feature artwork created by our in-house graphics team may be added to your published submission.
