NCSBN's David Benton reflects on leadership, retirement, and the future of nursing regulation: Ascend Radio
/

David Benton, an international health care leader with a long and storied career in nurse regulation, is currently poised to retire after eight years as CEO of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

As an independent, not-for-profit organization that brings nursing regulatory bodies together on matters of public health, safety and welfare, and nursing licensure, NCSBN has a sweeping mandate, one that means Benton and staff work tirelessly to foster cohesion and cooperation among nursing regulators.

Benton recently sat down for a second conversation with Ascend Magazine Editor Paul Leavoy to discuss a wide range of topics, including:

  • The value of NCSBN to the U.S. and the world at large.
  • His proudest accomplishments with the organization over the past eight years.
  • Trends that defined the field of nursing in his time as CEO.
  • How AI is transforming the work of nursing and health care regulation.
  • How nurse regulators can use data to measure their effectiveness, and much more.

Listen to Benton’s 2022 appearance on Ascend Radio here. If you’d like to read more about nursing regulation and NCSBN’s work, we also have a three-part Q&A series with Benton, which covers a range of other topics.
